TracPet,
Help you pet stay healthy

Project Overview

The TracPet app and smart collar aids in preventing canine obesity and keeps your dog's weight under control by monitoring their activity and keeping track of their BMI. TracPet tells you how much activity your dog needs (and gets!), and helps you easily keep track of it every day. Never lose your furry friend again with location tracking via GPS and keep eye on them at night using the built-in LED on the collar. Just pick a color & control the light remotely from the TracPet App.

Role

I was the lead designer on this product, designing the application from start to finish. I conducted user research, created branding and administered usability testing.

The Problem

Knowing about your dog's activity and nutrition can be a lifesaver. In the US alone, 50 million dogs are obese or overweight according to the American Pet Products Association. Dog obesity affects their owner too. Owners of overweight dogs spend more money than those with healthy weight dogs. Owners of overweight dogs on average spend 17% more on healthcare and 25% more on medication.

Meeting your dog's daily activity and exercise goals is essential for your dog's physical and mental health. The dual-purpose fitness/location trackers helps you reunite with your dog quickly if they ever escape or get lost. The TracPet calendar makes sure you never miss an important doggy date again by enabling you to enter programmable reminders for vaccinations, de-worming and vet appointments.

User Research

Dog owners | Health conscious | Caring

Active lifestyle | Male/Female | age 30-60

Interviews with dog owners showed that dog owners are often worried about their pet’s health and needs. The target audience shared that they have faced problems with getting consistent information about their dogs health through conventional paths (vet visits). They also stated that they have a strong desire to have quick and easy access to realtime data about their dog's wellbeing.

Branding and Design System

I aimed to keep the design for TracPet modern and clean and friendly. When choosing the fonts, colors and icons I took into consideration that this app does not target one gender and a wide variety of ages.

Because I aimed for something clean and modern, but also open, approachable and slightly playful I chose for a complementary color scheme of light muted tones of blue with accents of coral and navy. Too enhance the clean modern esthetic I chose for a sans serif font.

User Testing and Iteration

After User testing prototypes among the target audience a few things came forward

- Decreased the number of onboarding steps (decrease friction & build momentum)

- Provide clearer instructions for making profiles, when are you entering the dogs info vs. the owners

- Changed the wording to make it less formal

- Clearer dashboard navigation and user interface

- Add a zero screen

- Simplify the pairing experience by providing clearer instructions

Final Design

After the redesign and changes in the UI users more quickly understood the onboarding proces, especially with the added visuals. In general, users felt more confident in navigating the app. When the prototype of the wearable that goes along with the app will be finished another round of user testing will be conducted to further develop the application and create a seamless user experience.
