Project Overview
The Dutch National Police required a data analysis and visualization tool to monitor societal trends, assess safety and crime patterns, and inform strategic policy development.
For the early phases of this project I led the overall design, managed a cross-functional team of designers and interfaced with developers for consistent feedback cycles. The end-goal was to create a user-friendly, privacy-compliant data analysis tool to enable data-driven decision-making.

Objectives

Build a privacy-compliant data aggregation and visualization system.

Create a tool that gives users the power to provide/share and monitor data insights through intuitive dashboards and visual tools.

Develop a scalable data solution that aligns with future data- and user needs.
Challenges

Complexity: The tool had to balance robust analytics with intuitive usability for non-technical users.

Privacy and Safety: Sensitive data can only be viewed by authorised personal and used anonymized in analysis.

Disconnected Data Landscape: publicly available data and internally collected data sets were not gathered in one location. Data was manually linked for trend analysis.

Conducted client brainstorming sessions, stakeholder and user interviews, data audits to understand the technical constraints.

Analyzed competitors’ tools to benchmark visualization and reporting functionalities.
Wireframing & Prototyping

Designed wireframes from low- to high-fidelity, focusing on key workflows like onboarding, acces control, data visualization and report generation.

Prototyped modular dashboards for customizable data reports, including geomaps, graphs, and statistics.

Defined a role-based access control system (RBAC) to manage sensitive data access across 11 police districts and governmental branches.

Designed UI’s that enable users to visualize data in through graphs, geomaps, and statistics.

Facilitated usability testing with a pilot group of 80 people.

implemented direct feedback feature inside the application for reporting bugs and UX feedback.

Iterated on features based on user feedback.

Streamlined application navigation to accomodate a more seamless workflow for users switching between different teams and workspaces.
Key Outcomes

Enhanced Strategic Planning: Analysts and policymakers could now compare societal trends with internal data, enabling proactive responses to societal and security developments.

Improved Data Visualization: Designed intuitive UI components for data visualization that can be presented on static or live updating dashboards.

A Scalable System: Built a system able to support ever expanding large datasets and new data formats, additional users, and future functionality.
